IScO Newsletter September 2025

Platzhalter

Dear Reader,

Autumn in Karlsruhe offers plenty of cultural highlights. The Karlsruhe Palace is closing its doors on September 28, 2025 – for at least 6 or 7 years. If you haven’t been yet, now is the time to go! The Orangerie at the Staatliche Kunsthalle has reopened with the Room to Grow festival (September 6–October 5; Website only available in German). Soon after, the ATOLL Festival (September 18–28) brings contemporary circus to Tollhaus, and on September 20 the Badisches Staatstheater celebrates its new season with the Theaterfest (Website only available in German). Rounding off the month, the Oktoberfest at Messplatz (September 27–October 4; Website only available in German) adds Bavarian flair with beer tents, food, and live music.

Beyond cultural highlights, official commemorative dates also shape public life in Germany. On October 3, Germany celebrates the Day of German Unity, marking the country’s reunification in 1990. As a national holiday, all shops and offices will be closed making it a good occasion for a long weekend.

And a few practical notes: mushroom season is here, and if you want to be safe, certified consultants are on hand every Monday 5–7 PM behind the Natural History Museum (through November 10, free of charge).

With so many highlights this autumn, there is plenty to explore in this newsletter. In this newsletter, you’ll find updates on upcoming IScO events, KIT news and announcements, and external news that could be of interest to you, including exciting funding opportunities. Plus, we’ve gathered the latest calls for proposals that might just spark your next project. Whether you're looking for new collaboration opportunities or staying up-to-date with cultural initiatives, there’s something for everyone!

Stay curious and take care!

IScO Excursion: Where should we go in 2026?

We’re currently thinking about the next IScO excursions for 2026—and we want to hear your ideas! The destination should be within two hours by regional train from Karlsruhe, reasonably priced (no ICE or long-distance trains), and suitable for a relaxed and safe group activity.

An IScO excursion is not just about sightseeing—it’s an opportunity to learn more about German culture, society, and history, to experience new places together with fellow international researchers, and to take a short break from academic life.

The trip will take place outside the university.

Have an idea? Let us know which places you’d love to explore this summer. We’re looking forward to your suggestions—and maybe we’ll turn one of them into our next excursion!

If questions arise, please write us an e-mail.
